The Grey Reef Labs Ethos
We have a set of core beliefs that guide how we work. This page highlights a few of them, and what they look like in practice.
Honesty and accuracy are paramount
This is the governing rule. Every score, projection, and claim we publish must be true and as accurate as the method allows, because people spend real time and money based on them.
How this shapes our work: We evaluate our own product ideas with the same scorecard we use for partners, and our own products don't get flattering scores. Some ideas we were excited about scored mediocre, and we shelved or rebuilt them instead of shipping them with better adjectives. We have removed claims from our own marketing because they were impressive but not literally true. If a statement isn't accurate, we fix the statement or we do the work to make it true. Those are the only two options.
Grounded numbers beat exciting numbers
Projections are promises with charts. We build ours conservative on purpose: grounded numbers that get beaten build momentum, optimistic numbers that don't materialize destroy trust, and trust is the only asset in this business that doesn't come back.
How this shapes our work: Our proposals and product pages are less exciting than our competitors'. We're fine with that. The people we want to work with can tell the difference.
Skin in the game
On the right partnerships we invest our own time and skills in exchange for a share of the outcome, which means we only say yes when we genuinely believe the thing will work. It's the only incentive structure where our advice and our interests point the same direction.
Round numbers, because pricing is a values call
You will not find a $499 or a $97 anything from us. Charm pricing works, which is exactly the problem: it works by nudging instead of convincing. It always felt dishonest to us, so we won't do it.
How this shapes our work: Our first two products originally shipped at $47 and $67, before we made this call. In July 2026 we repriced them to $50 and $70. The products we create and sell are worth what we charge. No trickeration required.
We build things people want, not things they can't stop
There's a real difference between a product people genuinely want and a product engineered to be hard to stop using. The second kind makes more money. We build the first kind, and when a design choice could go either way, we name the distinction out loud and pick the honest side.
The Do-Good Track
We've formalized a standing track for projects whose success is measured in net community benefit, not revenue. Here's the honest part: it hasn't built anything yet. It activates once the commercial side of the business can fund it. When we are fortunate enough to ship a 'do-good' project, it will be scored on actual measured benefit with the same rigor as everything else. No impact-washing.
We work this way because we believe it's the right way to do business, and to live life.
